The Blair Estate is a unique piece of Scottish history. The origins of this ancient castle date back to c.1105 with the construction of a basic Norman Tower; the remains of which can still be seen in The Guard Room.
In the 12th century King William the Lion granted The Barony of Blair and its associated lands to Jean Francois, a knight of Norman descent. His son took the name de Blaire which was later adapted to Blair. From the early Norman descendants, Blair has become inextricably woven with Scottish history and has evolved from the first rudimentary castellated tower into the grand, yet comfortable home that stands there today. With a second tower added in 1203 and major additions in 1668 and in the 1800s, the castle is reputed to be the oldest continually inhabited mansion house in Scotland.
The elegant 1668 Wing was added by William Blair (c1640 - 1689) and his wife Lady Margaret Hamilton, fifth daughter of the second Duke of Hamilton, who he married in March 1666. The initials of LMH & WB are carved above the windows to celebrate their conversion of this complex of towers into an elegant, grand and comfortable country house.
The Drawing Room, with its beautiful Adam style plaster work containing the heraldic motifs of the Hamilton and Blair crests, was originally two adjoining rooms. The symbols of the English rose, the Scottish thistle, the French fleur de lys and the Hamilton crescent moons in the plasterwork all relate to the historic roots of the family.
The bedrooms at Blair have all been re-furbished to the highest standards of classic luxury. Each bedroom, with stunning views over the gardens and parkland has its own dedicated bathroom with bespoke Penhaligon’s amenities, luxurious bed linen from The White Company as well as access to Wi-Fi.
